Albany
Small but distinctive, shaped by the Southern Ocean, cool coastal with a rich sense of place
Albany sits at the southern edge of the Great Southern, where the vineyards are shaped by the cool, steady influence of the Southern Ocean. Most sites sit between 50 and 100 metres above sea level, planted across sandy loams, gravelly lateritic soils, granite and ironstone.
The afternoon sea breeze, known locally as the Albany Doctor, helps soften the summer heat and allows the fruit to ripen slowly while holding onto its freshness and natural acidity.
With reliable rainfall, a long growing season and harvest often stretching from early March through to late April, Albany produces wines with purity, balance, layered flavour and a real sense of place.

Climate
Albany’s climate is strongly shaped by the Southern Ocean, with cooling sea breezes helping to moderate summer temperatures and protect the vines from heat stress.
The difference between daytime and night-time temperatures allows the grapes to ripen slowly while holding onto their natural acidity and freshness.
Cool, wet winters provide reliable rainfall, while the warmer, drier growing season encourages healthy, even ripening.
This long, steady season gives the fruit time to build flavour without losing balance, resulting in wines that are bright, layered and beautifully fresh.
This allows fruit to develop with clarity and depth, delivering:
→ ripe yet controlled fruit expression
→ structural integrity
→ natural balance
Soils
Sandy loams and gravelly lateritic soils
Provide good drainage while holding enough moisture to support the vines through Albany’s warmer, drier summer months.
Ironstone gravel
Common on elevated, well-drained sites, encouraging balanced vine growth and contributing concentration, fine structure and a subtle savoury character.
Granite outcrops and ancient soils
Add diversity across vineyard sites and help shape wines with freshness, mineral detail and a strong sense of place.
Impact on wine style:
→ Bright natural acidity
→ Fine texture and structure
→ Pure, layered fruit expression
→ Freshness, balance and subtle savoury complexity
