Porongurup

Elevation meets purity, elegance and pretty aromatics.

Rising dramatically from the surrounding landscape, the Porongurup Range is one of the most visually striking and geologically unique wine regions in Australia.

This is a place where ancient granite peaks meet cool-climate viticulture…. creating wines of extraordinary precision, tension, and mineral clarity.

Humble and small in scale but immense in reputation, Porongurup is home to some of the Great Southern’s most acclaimed producers and finest expressions of Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

Climate

Perched at elevation and shaped by cooling Southern Ocean breezes, Porongurup experiences warm, sunlit days followed by distinctly cool nights. This natural rhythm slows the ripening process, allowing flavours to build gradually and with precision. The result is fruit that carries aromatic lift, fine structure, and a remarkable sense of balance….a true reflection of a region where climate and patience work in perfect harmony.

● Elevated sites with cooler temperatures than surrounding areas

● Strong influence from Southern Ocean breezes

● Large diurnal range (warm days, cool nights)

● Extended ripening → enhanced flavour development

This allows fruit to develop slowly, delivering: → aromatic lift → fine structure → remarkable balance

Soils

The defining feature of Porongurup is its ancient granitic foundation, some of the oldest exposed rock formations in the world.

● Granite bedrock: Provides exceptional drainage and contributes to the region’s distinctive mineral profile

● Sandy loam topsoils: Light, free-draining, encouraging deep root systems and low vigour

● Impact on wine style: → Fine, linear structure → Mineral tension and clarity → Bright natural acidity → Elegant, age-worthy wines
