The property was purchased in 1946 by Vic and Netta Lange and began as a mixed grain and livestock farm. Established by Tony Smith in 1968, Plantagenet Wines was the first commercial winery in the Great Southern and helped lay the foundations for one of Australia’s most exciting cool-climate wine regions.

The story began when Tony planted trial vineyards of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon on his Bouverie property in Denbarker. Further plantings followed at Wyjup, including Riesling, and the first Plantagenet vintage was produced in 1974.
