Meet the Producers
of the Great Southern
Independent. Family Owned. Boutique. Iconic.
The people behind the wines, each with a story to tell.
3drops Wines
A small, family-owned producer in Mount Barker, 3drops Wines has built a quiet reputation for crafting elegant, cool-climate wines with clarity and precision.
With a hands-on approach from vineyard to bottle, their wines reflect both site and season, delivering purity, balance and a strong sense of place.
Alkoomi Wines
Alkoomi is more than a winery—it is the Hallett family’s home, livelihood and legacy.
The property was purchased in 1946 by Vic and Netta Lange and began as a mixed grain and livestock farm. In 1971, their daughter Judy and her husband Merv Lange made the bold decision to plant one hectare each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling, together with smaller plantings of Shiraz and Malbec.
Bunn Vineyard
Bunn Vineyard is a quietly remarkable Great Southern producer with a deep connection to land, farming and patience.
The Bunn family emigrated from Shrewsbury in the United Kingdom to Albany in Western Australia in the late 1960s, bringing with them a generational respect for farming and a belief in working with nature rather than against it.
Castle Rock Estate
Set beneath the ancient granite peaks of the Porongurup, Castle Rock Estate is one of the region’s benchmark producers, crafting elegant, site-driven wines with purity, finesse and a strong sense of place.
de VESÉ Wines
Wines are crafted by Andrew Vesey, whose approach to winemaking is guided by intuition, experience, and a deep respect for site. His philosophy is simple yet exacting: when the vineyard is in balance, gentle winemaking is enough. Fermentation and maturation are handled with restraint, allowing purity, subtle texture, and clarity of place to emerge without interference. These are wines patiently nurtured, rather than shaped.
Duke’s Vineyard
Set against the ancient granite slopes of the Porongurup, Duke’s Vineyard has long been recognised as one of the benchmark producers of Riesling in the Great Southern.
Founded by Duke and Hilde Ranson, the estate quickly earned a reputation for crafting wines of remarkable purity, precision and mineral character.
Express Winemakers
Express Winemakers captures the spirit of Mount Barker through carefully farmed vineyard sites, where old vines, granite-rich soils and Ryan’s hands-on approach come together in wines full of energy, honesty and place.
Ferngrove Wines
An expansive vineyard estate showcasing the scale and diversity of Frankland River, producing a broad range of styles with regional authenticity.
Fervor Wines
Fervor Wines is a collaboration that celebrates Western Australia’s diverse wine regions, with a strong focus on expressive Great Southern fruit.
Led by winemaker Mike Garland, the wines are crafted with precision and intent, balancing structure, energy and site expression.
Forest Hill Vineyard
One of the founding vineyards of the Great Southern, Forest Hill helped establish Mount Barker’s reputation for premium cool-climate wines.
Known for elegance and consistency, their wines reflect both heritage and precision.
Frankland Estate
At Frankland Estate, the story is one of vision, family, and an unwavering respect for place.
Founded in 1988 by Judi Cullam and Barrie Smith, the estate was built on a belief that truly expressive wines begin with a deep understanding of the land.
Gilberts Wines
Brings a sense of energy and generosity to Mount Barker, producing wines that are both expressive and approachable.
Family-owned and deeply connected to the region, their wines reflect a balance of character and consistency, making them a trusted and much-loved name within the Great Southern
Harewood Estate
Harewood Estate has become one of the Great Southern’s most respected family producers, crafting regionally expressive wines with consistency, depth and a strong sense of place.
La Violetta Wines
A small-batch Great Southern producer, La Violetta works with thoughtfully sourced fruit from Mount Barker, crafting wines with a focus on texture, character and site expression.
With a minimal-intervention approach in the winery, the wines are allowed to evolve naturally, resulting in styles that are vibrant, layered and quietly distinctive.
Lange Estate
A small, family-owned producer in Mount Barker, 3drops Wines has built a quiet reputation for crafting elegant, cool-climate wines with clarity and precision.
With a hands-on approach from vineyard to bottle, their wines reflect both site and season, delivering purity, balance and a strong sense of place.
Plantagenet Wines
Established by Tony Smith in 1968, Plantagenet Wines was the first commercial winery in the Great Southern and helped lay the foundations for one of Australia’s most exciting cool-climate wine regions.
The story began when Tony planted trial vineyards of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon on his Bouverie property in Denbarker. Further plantings followed at Wyjup, including Riesling, and the first Plantagenet vintage was produced in 1974.
Rickety Gate Wines
Set along the picturesque Scotsdale Road tourist route just outside Denmark, Rickety Gate Wines is a story of vision, courage, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

A principle that shapes everything from the vineyard to the bottle, with a focus on crafting wines that reflect both place and intention.
